How to Become a Notary in Louisiana:

To become a notary in Louisiana, you must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Be a resident citizen or alien of Louisiana.
  • Be able to read, write, speak and be sufficiently knowledgeable of the English language.
  • Be registered to vote in the parish in which you seek a notary commission.
  • Not have been convicted of a felony and not been pardoned.
  • Hold a high school diploma, a diploma for completion of a home study program approved by the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education or a high school equivalency diploma issued after successfully completing the test of General Educational Development.

If you meet these qualification requirements, follow the steps below to become a Louisiana notary:

  1. Complete an Application to Qualify and pay $35 qualifying fee.

  2. Take the Notary Exam Pre-assessment and pay a $30 test fee.

  3. Take and pass the state notary exam and pay $100 registration fee.

  4. Purchase a five-year, $50,000 notary bond.

  5.  File with the Louisiana Secretary of State's Office:

  6. File a duplicate Oath of Office with the parish clerk of court within one month after your oath is administered.
